Sphingolipids are found in membranes of both plants and animals, and are abundant in bold, nerve and brain tissues acting as structural spacers in membranes. These are complex in nature and contain sphingosine, an 18 carbon long hydrocarbon chain with a nitrogenous base. Sometimes sphingosine is replaced by dihydrosphingosine.
