Hydrogen combines with most of the metals and non-metals (except noble gases) to form compounds which are known as hydrides: On the basis of their physical and chemical properties and types of bonding, these are classified into the following categories:

I.    Saline Hydrides
II.    Metallic Hydrides
III.    Covalent Hydrides
IV.    Transition-Metal Hydrides.
