A detailed study of the magnetic susceptibilities of a large number of organic and inorganic compounds (carried out by Pascal during 1908-1913) has revealed that like many other physical properties such as molar refraction, preacher etc., the molar magnetic susceptibility (x M) is an additive as well as a constitutive property. The values assigned to the various atoms and to the structure factors (i.e. double bond, triple bond, rings etc.) can be contained form the experimentally determined values for a large number of elements and compounds.* The values of magnetic susceptibilities for some of the atoms and structural groups are given in Table below.
