Declination Magnetograph

This instrument is used to record the changes in the declination at a place. It consists of a short cylindrical magnet NS which is suspended by means NS which is suspended by means of fine quartz fiber from a torsion head, so that it is capable of rotations about a vertical axis.

The upper half A of the mirror is attached to the magnet, whereas the lower half B is fixed to the base. A beam of light after reflection from the mirrors is allowed to fall on the photographic film rotating at a constant speed. The variation in declination is recorded on the film. When there is no change in the declination at the place, the reflected light will trace a line on the film. But when changes occur in the declination at the place, the trace of the reflected line on the film will be wavy.
