The Ionosphere

The ionosphere is an example of plasma. The ionosphere is very important from the view point of long distance communication through radio waves because of its properties of reflecting the radio waves back to the earth.

The ionosphere is a region in the upper atmosphere, extending from about 50Km to more than 1000 km above the earth. It is region in which the constituent gases are ionized, due to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. The electron density N varies from layer to layer in the ionosphere. The electron density increases continuously from zero at the lower boundary reaching a peak at some height, and then decreases continuously.
