If a positively charged conducting body A be brought near a perfectly insulated conducting body B, which has initially no charge, the free electrons of the conducting body will be caused to drift in a direction opposite to that of the field. As a result, there will be an excess of electrons at the end nearer the + vely charged conducting body, giving this end a negative charge, while the opposite end will lack electrons and its charge will be positive. The separation of charges on a conducting body due to the action of the charged body is known as electrostatic induction and the charges thus induced are known as induced charges. When the conducting body is removed for the field, the charges induced on it will disappear, and conducting body will again become uncharged.
