Why is serotonin broken down?

If it will need to be synthesized again later?
So, the paths it can follow once it's been brought back into the axon of the pre synaptic neuron are
A) it's stored in the vescicles to be reused
B) it's broken down by the MAOs
But what's the purpose of B? It would make sense to me if the MAOs acted before the reuptake to reduce the intrasynaptic concentration of MAs... sorry if it's a stupid question, I just can't seem to find an answer.
