Build Help! How to make DC battery power AC motor?

So I salvaged a motor that came from an old paint mixer (the motor still works perfectly). I'm re-purposing the motor to make a motorized longboard and I was planning to power it with an extra 18 volt drill battery. I know that the power will be much lower but that isn't an issue; the motor goes way too fast anyway. 
Is there a trick I can do to make the whole system work? Must I get a transformer? If I must, are there any you would recommend?
