Statistics: what does P(|Z|



The question is as follows: 
If Z is the variable in the Normal Distribution tables, find the values of a such that P(|Z|<a)=0.9 

What I don't get is how the two lines (I think it's called modulus) change the question. I know how to do it if the lines aren't there. So what difference do they make?
