Electronegativity

Electronegativity is defined as power of an atom in a molecule to attract shared electron pair towards itself. Greater the ability of an atom to attract shared electrons, larger is the value of electronegative. Thus, t is different form electron affinity which is a quantitative property associated with an isolated atom. Electronegativity, on the other hand, is a qualitative property and is not the property of an isolated atom but of an atom that may be nodded to one or more atoms in a molecule or complex ion. It may, however, be mentioned that although electro negativity is not the property of an isolated atom yet often it is considered so and related to some of the properties of an isolated atom.
