Statistical Thermodynamics

The branch of science dealing with the calculation of thermodynamic properties of the systems using the methods of statistical mechanics is called statistical thermodynamics. In other words, statistical thermodynamic deals with the calculation of thermodynamic deal with the calculation of the macroscopic properties of the systems such as pressure, entropy, internal energy. Gibbs free energy etc. from the microscopic properties i.e., properties of the individual molecules such as their position and moment (in classical statistics) and their quantum states (in quantum statistics).

The link between ‘thermodynamics’ and ‘statistical mechanics’ is through the fundamental relationship between the ‘entropy’ used in thermodynamic and the ‘probability’ used in statistical mechanics. This relationship is derived in the next section.
