The United Nations Development Programmed

United Nations Development Programmed with headquarters in New York and local offices in 108 countries was set up in 1965. It was the result of the General Assembly’s decision to mirage two of the United Nations’ organization, gamely, the Expanded Programmed of Technical Assistance (EPTA) and the Special Fund which was set up in 1958 to provide pre-investment assistance to relatively large development projects.

This development programmed is financed by voluntary annual contributions from Member States of the United Nations or of its related agencies as its predecessor organizations were.UNDP is the world’s largest multilateral technical coordination organization of the United Nations for development activates.UNDP is the United Nations’ main source of grants for sustainable human development that is both people-centered and handles the environment.The funds come form voluntary contributions of Member States and UN agencies which provides about $ 1 billion yearly through Undo’s central resources. A 36-member Executive Board representing both developed and developing countries tackles bother programmers and policy decisions.

      UNDP has three over-riding goals:

1.    To help the United Nations become a powerful and cohesive force for sustainable human 
       development.
2.    To focus its own resources on aeries of objectives central to sustainable human development-
       poverty elimination environmental regeeration,job creation, and advancement of women.
3.    To strengthen international cooperation for sustainable human development and serve as a
       major substantive resource t achieve it.   

Through a workable network of 136 offices, UNDP works with governments, orgnisaions of civilsociert and people in some 175 developing countries and territories. To execute the projects and programs it supports, it draws upon developing countries’ national capacities in technical field as well as expertise of over 30 international regional and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Peoples are at the centre of all UNDP activities, which promote growth with equity. Focuses on countries’ capacity for poverty elimination and grass-roots development, environmental conservation, and sustainable use ofnatualresurces, management development, technical cooperation among developing countries, transfer and adoption of technology and the advancement of women. Entrepreneurship is promoted as a means of creating jobs and reducing poverty, global and inter-regional programmers address world-wide issues such as food scarcity, safe motherhood, ad treatment of HIV/AIDS.

A yearly human development report prepared for the UNDP by an independent team of consultants assists the international community in developing new , practical and pragmatic concepts, measures and policy instruments for promoting people-oriented development. The UNDP plays the chief coordinating role for operational development of activates undertaken by the whole United Anions system . This includes administering special purpose funds such as the Unite Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), The United Nations Volunteers (UNV), and the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)

UNDP assists developing countries in preparing for major United Nations Conferences-for example the 1992 conference on Environment and Development, the 1995 Conference on Women UNDP assists those countries in carrying out theactionplans of these conferences, and mobilizing the additional resources needed to do so.

With the World Bank and the United Nations Environment programme,the UNDP is one of the managing partners of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), through which it is helping countries translate global conches about ozone layer depletion,bio-diversity loss, international water pollution, global warring into local action plans.

In emergency situations, UNDP works closely with other United Nations agencies to ensure a relief-to-continuum. Its “preventive development” programmers in such areas as poverty elimination, good gvernance, and human rights protecting help to create conditions for lasting peace.

UNDP administers United Nations Volunteers (UNV) and even funds it with the cooperation of United Nations agencies as well as with donations from governments of member countries. About 4,000 UNV specialists, field workers and natioanl volunteers serve annually in 130 countries. They services in development programmers of governments, assisted by UNDP and the United Nations agencies, or in programmers initiated and executed by UNV itself. A hallmark of the UNV programmers is its support to community-based initiatives. Today more than 20 percent of the Urns are involved in grass-roots projects. Urns are also involved in humanitarian relief work and are also in UN operations for peace-building and democreacy, specially inflector work and human rights promotion.

UNV on its part administers a UNISTAR programmed (United Nations Short Term Advisory Resources) and assigns executives and technical experts to advise private and public sector entrepreneurs. The TOKTEN programmed (Transfer of Knowledge Through Expatriate Nationals) enables expatriates to assist in their countries of origin.

Urns are drawn form more than 120 nationalities; three quarters come from developing countries, thus Urn’s emphasis on South-south Cooperation. Fifty five percent of all Urns work in Africa, another twenty-five percent in Asia, while the remaining Urns serve inflating American and the Caribbean, Europe, and the Commonwealth of Russian States and in Arab States.

Professional qualification is a pre-condition for the Urns; not only do they hold degrees or diplomas form technical institutions or universities, but also they must have worked for more than ten tears before joining UNV, and the average age is forty. Their contracts are normally for two years the shorter assignments for electoral of humanitarian duties. Urns receive a modestlivign allowance, sufficient to over their expenses in the country of their assignment, rahter than a salary are market value.
