Cavitations

•    Cavitations is defined as the formation of bubbles filled of vapours within the body of a moving liquid. These vapor bubbles begin to appear whenever the pressure at the point in a flow falls equal to or below the vapour pressure of the liquid.

•    When these bubbles flow with the liquid and come in contact with high pressure, the vapour gets condensed and the bubbles suddenly collapse.

•    The space occupied by the bubble is filled by surrounding liquid, due to which some noise occurs and vibrations are produced.

•    The cavities collapse on the surface of the body due to which material of solid surface gets eroded.

•    The cavitations may occur in high-speed hydraulic machines such as turbines, pumps, marine propellers and in certain portion of the pipeline.
