Viscous Flow

•    A laminar flow is that in which the fluid flows in laminae or layer, there is no microscopic mixing of adjacent fluid layers.

•    The shape of the lamina depends upon the shape of the boundaries of the flow passage.

•    For example, (i) If the flow take place between two parallel flat plates, the laminae must be plane sheets parallel t each other as shown in if the flow takes place through a round pipe, the laminae become concentric cylindrical sheet as shown.

(a) Plates

•    The flow of a fluid will be laminar when,
(i)    Velocity of flow is low
(ii)    Diameter of pipe is small
(iii)    The density of fluid is less
(iv)    High viscosity
(v)    Reynolds’s number is less than 2000.
